Opera Theater Oregon’s production features Grammy® award-winning composer Michael Daugherty’s 2016 song cycle for soprano, baritone, radio announcer and ensemble, blending original lyrics with music that often draws from the simple, yet enduring folk melodies that Guthrie would rework into his own songs. Conceived as a Depression-era radio program, Daugherty’s stylistically eclectic work weaves the political, social, and environmental themes of Woody Guthrie’s era with poignant and contemporary relevance. Also on the program is an emerging and rising voice in opera, composer Michael Lanci’s award-winning Songs for Joe Hill, inspired by the protest songs of 19th Century labor activist Joe Hill. OTO’s presentation will be the NW premiere of these works!

Our brains undergo numerous changes that affect memory, motor, and sensory functions as we age. Many of these changes are amplified in diseases like Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Could music limit the effects of aging and neurodegenerative diseases?

At this event, learn from Dr. Larry Sherman, a musician and Professor of Neuroscience at the Oregon Health & Science University, and singer/songwriter Naomi LaViolette as they explore how listening, practicing, and performing music influence the brain, and how these activities could impact brain aging and disease.

This event is produced in collaboration with Oregon Repertory Singers in support of their Fall concert, Shadow and Light, an Alzheimer’s Journey by Northwest composer, Joan Szymko.

Willy Porter has been turning first time listeners into die hard fans for more than two decades. Willy blurs the line between indie-folk and rock with his searing signature finger-picking guitar sound, absorbing lyrics, and playful, high-energy live performance style. He has shared world stages with music icons Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, and Paul Simon, carving out a successful solo career as an artist who makes music that resonates long after the last guitar chord fades.

Portland artist Michael Namkung teams up with transformational speaker Kyle Cease for an experiential mind-bending journey through storytelling, poetry and live visual art, in a creative process that breaks down our self-imposed limitations and makes a break for freedom.

Beneath the dry surface features of every human life runs a powerful current of creative energy waiting to be expressed out into the world. And while every individual has a unique path, there is only one way forward—to embrace the art of becoming yourself.

During intermission and after the show, Kyle will sign copies of his new book, The Illusion of Money: Why Chasing Money is Stopping You from Receiving It, and Michael will sign copies of his book of poetry, Seeing The Invisible.
